Geraldton Multi-User Facility and Youth Precinct

Jul | 2014

The brief for this project began with a simple statement, 'we want a landmark to complete the picture on the foreshore'.

However, the project - with seven individual stakeholders with unique needs for function, security, technology and capacity; a coastal site subject to high winds, adjacent to the port; an event space capable of hosting the annual Australia Day celebrations amongst a myriad of other large and small events and a youth precinct worthy of attracting both locals and tourists - is very complex.

CHRISTOU's concept has been unanimously supported by all stakeholders without reservation. The project has moved from briefing - with tenders likely to be called at the beginning of February.

The design approach incorporates three buildings linked by courtyards to shelter the event space. CHRISTOU has positioned the youth precinct at the opposite end of the site, connected to the refurbished Railway Building and visitor centre.

The elements frame the event space - breaking down the expansive site. The architecture is inspired by the industrial nature of adjacent port structures and the eastern breakwater. CHRISTOU has used simple materials in their raw state.
