City Beach Surf Club Takes Home Public Architecture Award

Jul | 2016

CHRISTOU is honoured to have received a highly prestigious Public Architecture Award from the Australian Institute of Architects (WA Chapter) for our design of the City Beach Surf Club, a new community and commercial project at the edge of the Indian Ocean. This award is testament to the outstanding vision of the elected members of the Town of Cambridge and the exceptional leadership of Jason Buckley, CEO and Brett Jackson, Director Projects.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our team of architects and designers who have worked together to deliver an architectural icon. While we value all awards, we are exceptionally proud to have received this accolade within the category of Public Architecture. As architects, we are driven by end-user satisfaction and the public support we have received, and continue to receive, has been fantastic.

Jury Comments: "The City Beach Surf Club and Commercial Development has transformed its locale into a vibrant foreshore and restaurant precinct. The design demonstrates considerable skill in section and plan. Within a V-shaped composition commercial tenancies occupy street level, while the surf club sits on a plinth on the beach.

Crafted by these two wings of building is a generous wedge of public space opening up to the north, containing public park and amphitheatre areas. Via the stepping plan form all spaces enjoy sweeping ocean views and magnificent beach and landscape settings. The north-west orientation offers both shelter to the public outdoor areas behind the surf club and a delightfully surprising vista along the coast.

The sleek white concrete surf club building tucked into the dune is home to state of the art facilities for surf club operations and training. It also provides public beachfront amenities in the depth of a heavily canted wall.  Upon its flat roof, glass block seats and informal stages are surf club lightwells by day and glowing beacons by night. The lookout breaks the surf club silhouette for those who wish to take in those timeless City Beach views to the western horizon.

The jury congratulates the architects for their innovative approach to this dynamic development which has activated and enriched the City Beach foreshore."
