CHRISTOU was commissioned to design the new City Beach Surf Club (completed 2016) and precinct following a highly competitive Australia-wide design competition. The brief proposed delivery of an iconic surf club building, three commercial tenancies, public amenities and a major public open space for the Town of Cambridge. CHRISTOU's response has revolved around the idea of creating a resonant place, a waterfront destination that would cater for a variety of commercial and recreation activities. The master plan has created three key elements to support the community and create a place: a new commercial lane with street frontage; an integrated public space which connects beach amphitheatre, plaza, car parking and pedestrian pathways connecting the beach and commercial tenancies. And the development of a new surf club as focal point.

The landscaped roof of the surf club recreates the ecology of a dune and helps to shape the public space. The commercial buildings become transparent pavilions maintaining permeability to the site and providing the option for a staged implementation of the project.

The City Beach Surf Club precinct has been widely accepted by community, receiving a national commendation at Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's Australian Urban Design Awards, Urban Design-Small Scale as well as a prestigious Public Architecture Award from the Australian Institute of Architects (WA Chapter) in 2016.
